Ongoing Openings: We are always accepting qualified applicants for our field instructor or assistant instructor positions.

FIELD INSTRUCTOR (Full-time and Part-time positions available)

Description: Cal-Wood is seeking energetic, flexible, hard-working, and motivated applicants for an exciting and rewarding field instructor position. Our instructors are critical to the success of our school-age programs. Instructors are responsible for providing a fun and educational experience for a learning group made up of 10-20 students during each school’s visit. Typical programs are three-day / two-night programs with 4th – 6th graders. Our field instructors enjoy working in our 1,200-acre outdoor classroom with a team with other motivated individuals passionate about the outdoors, natural science, and education. We value providing access to dynamic, hands-on science education in the field to students from all different backgrounds.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a learning group made up of 10-20 students during each school’s visit for mostly outdoor learning activities. Typical programs are three-day / two-night programs with 4th – 6th graders.
  • Design, teach, and evaluate conservation education programs in accordance with the Colorado Academic Content Standards.
  • Incorporate math, history, creative writing, art and teambuilding into each program as requested by school.
  • Work two meals and one night program (typically a night hike or campfire) each week. Note: Instructors are never asked to work overnight.
  • Work with a team of other motivated and passionate staff to support operations of a small non-profit organization.

Qualifications

  • Strong desire and ability to work effectively with students from a variety of backgrounds and ages.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (ideally in science, natural resource management, education, outdoor education, or other related field), as well as two years of experience in education.
  • Ability to pass background checks.
  • High level of personal motivation for continued learning, personal responsibility for individual projects, and flexibility are necessary to meet the demands of a dynamic residential work schedule.
  • Ability to hike 1-4 miles daily, lift heavy objects, and maintain a cheerful attitude outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • First Aid/CPR knowledge or willingness to get certified required. Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certifications a plus.
  • Spanish ability is highly desired, but not mandatory.

Compensation: Full-time instructors: $1,500/month, housing and utilities, meals during programs, and 1/2 medical and full dental coverage. Part-time instructors: $12/hour for a full day (8:30am – 4:30pm) plus possible additional compensation for working multiple evening programs.

ASSISTANT INSTRUCTOR

Description: Cal-Wood is seeking energetic, flexible, hard-working, and motivated applicants for an exciting and rewarding assistant instructor position. This position was designed for college graduates looking to gain experience in the environmental education field. Assistants shadow Field Instructors with the goal of eventually instructing Cal-Wood curriculum. They also provide support to facilitate our programs. Assistant Instructors work on a team passionate about the outdoors, environmental science, and education and have ample opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the environmental education field. We value providing access to dynamic, hands-on science education in the field to students from all different backgrounds.

Responsibilities:

  • Shadow Field Instructors as they teach and develop familiarity with curriculum, with the eventual goal of independently instructing learning groups in Cal-Wood curriculum.
  • Work on educational and natural resources projects (rotating responsibilities until the end of the season).
  • Collaborate with Field Instructors to design, teach, and evaluate conservation education programs for students of all ages in accordance with the Colorado Academic Content Standards.
  • Help with organization of mealtimes for students and lead evening programs (such as night hikes and campfires). Assistants are expected to work 1 – 2 evenings per week. Note: Assistant Instructors are never asked to work overnight. 
  • Determine and complete a “legacy” project of specific interest to benefit Cal-Wood and future generations of students.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (ideally in science, natural resource management, education, outdoor education, or other related field).
  • Passion for working with kids in the outdoors.
  • Experience working with children required.
  • Ability to pass background checks.
  • Ability to hike 1-4 miles daily, lift heavy objects, and maintain a cheerful attitude outdoors in all weather conditions.

PART-TIME COOK: Cal-Wood’s Kitchen Staff has fluctuating needs over the course of each year. We seek to supplement our staff with qualified individuals who have basic cooking and baking knowledge, organizational skills, the capacity to multi-task and work independently, the ability to work with diverse groups of people (approx 40-70 people), including children. Applicants must pass background check and have a signed physician health statement.
