School Programs Resume at Camp Tahosa:
We are thrilled to share with you that Cal-Wood is back doing what we do best — providing students with meaningful and fun learning in the Colorado Mountains. The recent floods were a setback for our organization, but it has also become a good learning opportunity for our students. Indeed, this natural phenomenon ties into our curriculum as we teach students about mountain weather, watersheds, adaptation, and geology.
Aspen Creek Elementary was the first Cal-Wood group to return to the mountains since the floods. Access to our 1,200-acre facility is still limited, but we are thrilled to have made Camp Tahosa our new home for these school trips. The superb organization and desire to proceed with their Cal-Wood trip allowed Aspen Creek’s 6th grade classes, nearly 150 students, to spend an incredible week hiking the land, learning about ecology, counting macroinvertebrates in the lake, and learning to use compasses and maps to explore their surroundings.
Our staff here at Cal-Wood has a renewed enthusiasm for sharing their knowledge of the land with students. Big smiles were seen as the kids enjoyed home cooked meals, gathered for evening activities around the campfire, and saw some moose in the meadow by the lake. We had a couple days of snow and got the students bundled up to play a game of predator/prey in the woods. We also had some typical, sunny Colorado days that provided us an opportunity to have meals outside and do team building activities in the meadow surrounded by aspen groves.
All in all, we have landed in a great place for outdoor education here at Tahosa. A big thank you to Aspen Creek for helping us adapt to our new facility and new land. It was great to see the program come together so nicely. This week, we have another BVSD school here for the week, and they are currently hiking near the base of Mount Audubon on a glorious Colorado day. Last night, they enjoyed a night hike under a nearly full moon. Things are returning to normalcy here in the mountains.
