Teaching English Learners Workshop
January 25th and 26th – 2014
EVENT WILL BE HELD AT METRO STATE IN DENVER
At Cal-Wood, we often serve schools with linguistically and culturally diverse students. To meet the learning needs of these classes, our instructors use innovative educational techniques such as Sheltering, to teach science, Colorado history, literacy & math. Because these strategies are so effective, Cal-Wood offers workshops to help school teachers and other educators improve their instruction of linguistically diverse students.
These workshops are custom-designed for educators who teach classes to English language learners. Cal-Wood’s Executive Director, Rafael Salgado teams up with UC-Denver’s Nancy Commins to provide a hands-on experience for teachers to improve how they teach culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms. These weekends are an affordable and easy get-away from town, learning with colleagues and enjoying the outdoors. On Saturday evening, there is a social to relax and network with other teachers.
- Participate in demonstrations of sheltering techniques
- Practice using rubrics to evaluate activities and text materials
- Learn to make modifications that improve your effectiveness
Sheltered Instruction is an approach to teaching that makes content more accessible and comprehensible to an English language learner. To demonstrate these strategies, we use state-of-the-art environmental/science education programs: Project Learning Tree and Project WILD. These interdisciplinary, supplemental, environmental and hands-on education programs are suitable for learners of all ages, abilities, cultures and ethnic groups. These programs have helped thousands of teachers increase their students’ proficiency in English and their knowledge of Science, Math, Geography, History, Literacy and Arts, and are available in Spanish.
