Mountain Biking at Cal-Wood
Mountain biking has been a part of Cal-Wood’s summer camps and Latino family camps for a few years – and in 2017, we partnered with the Boulder Mountainbike Alliance (BMA) and generous donors to provide everyone at Cal-Wood a better mountain biking and trail experience.
Mountain biking has an undeniable power to stimulate young people and adults, and bring out their desire for challenge and excitement. Transferring initial interest in nature into a healthy, long-term habit requires an introduction to mountain biking that is not intimidating or overwhelming. Our improved mountain biking program strives to achieve these goals!
BMA, UBikes, Specialized and generous donors supported Cal-Wood with bike gear for 20 family members – 20 mountain bikes, 20 helmets, 20 sets of elbow/knee pads and 20 gloves!
With BMA volunteers and generous donors, Cal-Wood is also improving the sustainability and experience of our trails. This summer, BMA volunteers joined Cal-Wood for 4 trail work days for a total of 89 volunteers and 318.5 hours donated.
BMA organized 3 mountain bike skills courses taught by trained ICP-certified instructors (IMBA Instructor Certification Program) at Cal-Wood this past summer – one for Cal-Wood staff and two at Latino Family Camps. We are excited to teacher our kids and families how to mountain bike in a safe, fun and progressive way!
